Field notes from building companies: what actually happened — the decision, the result, the receipts — and the lesson that will still be true in thirty years.

The rule

Every note has to pass two tests: it happened, and it will still be true in thirty years.

How this site works

Two tests for every note.

  1. 1It happened.Every note starts with something I actually did — a decision, a result, a mistake. No borrowed stories, no generated advice.
  2. 2It lasts. The lesson has to still be true in thirty years. If it depends on this year's tools, prices or headlines, it goes somewhere else.
  3. 3Decisions go on the record. What I decided, what I expected and — when the date comes — what actually happened. Right or wrong.
  4. 4Nothing is deleted. When I change my mind, I say so in a new note and link back.
