About

Hi, I’m Ranjit.

I build companies. Here I write down what actually happens in the work — and keep only the lessons that will outlast it.

Earned, not generated#

Anyone can generate advice now. What can't be generated is a track record — decisions made, results lived with, mistakes owned. So every note here has to pass two tests:

  1. It happened. It starts with something I actually did — a decision, a result, a mistake — with the receipts where I can show them.
  2. It lasts. The lesson will still be true in thirty years. If it depends on this year's tools, prices or headlines, it doesn't belong here.

Bigger decisions go on the record: what I decided, what I expected and, when the date comes, what actually happened.

How I use AI#

The way I'd use a good editor: to tidy, check and format. The experiences, decisions and lessons are mine. If it didn't happen, it isn't here.

What I write about#

  • Thinking — seeing clearly, deciding well, changing your mind.
  • Work — craft, ownership and the habits behind work that lasts.
  • Wealth — money, value and compounding.
  • People — trust, persuasion and relationships.
  • Life — health, time, books and the long game.

Why write it down every day#

Things that happen are forgotten within a week; lessons written down the same day are not. A public, dated archive also keeps me honest about what I actually believed at the time. If one note in thirty is useful to you, the other twenty-nine were the cost of finding it.

How to read this site#

  • Start here for the notes worth reading first.
  • Field notes has the newest notes in full; most take two or three minutes.
  • Essays are the long reads. Books are the ones that lasted.
  • Press / anywhere to search the archive.

Say hello#

The best way to follow along is the daily note. If something here was useful — or wrong — I'd like to hear about it.

Field notes

Follow the field notes.

What actually happened in the work, and the one lesson that will still be true in thirty years. Read them in any feed reader, or follow wherever you already are.
